Sniper
A marksman trained to deliver precise rifle fire at distance, paired with fieldcraft, concealment, and observation that informs much of precision-rifle gear.
A sniper is a marksman trained to place precise rifle fire on targets at extended distance, working as much through fieldcraft as through marksmanship. The role combines accurate shooting with the ability to move unseen, build a concealed hide, and observe a target area for long stretches, often using a ghillie suit to break up the human outline. In military and law-enforcement practice the sniper rarely operates alone, pairing with a spotter who reads conditions and confirms hits.
Much of modern precision-rifle equipment and technique traces back to this discipline, from heavy match barrels to detailed range cards and wind logs. The civilian sport of long-range shooting borrows the same fundamentals, scaling them toward extreme long range where wind reading and elevation hold the same weight they do in the field. The related designated marksman role sits closer to the squad, bridging the gap between the rifleman and the dedicated sniper.
