A good hide breaks the shooter’s outline against the background, controls glint and reflection from optics and weapon, and provides a stable platform for the shot. Camouflage netting, vegetation, and ghillie material are common tools.

In civilian precision rifle competition, “hide” is more often used informally for the prone position itself. The tactical literature treats it as a structured discipline with its own training tradition.
