Palma is one of the oldest long-range target traditions, fired prone with a sling for support and aperture iron sights rather than a scope. The course of fire is shot at 800, 900, and 1,000 yards, and the classic chambering is the .308 Winchester firing a 155-grain bullet, a combination the rules grew up around. Reading the changing wind across those three distances with only iron sights is the defining challenge of the game.

Because there is no magnified optic to refine the aim, the discipline puts a premium on consistent position, precise sight alignment, and disciplined trigger control. Competitive scores still demand match-grade ammunition and a rifle that prints a tight group, since the X-ring at 1,000 yards is unforgiving of any sloppiness in the load or the hold.
