High power, also called across the course, is a course-of-fire rifle discipline shot at varied distances from field positions with sling support. A typical match moves the shooter through several yard lines and several positions, so no single skill carries the whole event. The format has long been a proving ground for the core fundamentals of rifle marksmanship.
Strings are usually fired with iron sights, and competitors rotate through offhand standing, sitting, and prone stages, each with its own challenges. Standing offhand is the least stable and separates the field quickly, while the prone strings at the longest distances demand steady wind reading and a consistent hold.
