Unknown Distance
Also: UKD
A stage or match format where target ranges are not given and the shooter must determine them before firing, testing ranging skill alongside marksmanship.
Unknown distance, often shortened to UKD, describes a stage or match format where target ranges are not provided and the shooter has to work them out before firing. This adds a layer of problem-solving on top of the shot itself, because an error in range directly becomes an error in elevation and a miss. The format separates shooters who can simply hold steady from those who can also read a field problem.
Competitors close that gap with a range finder when one is allowed, or with reticle ranging using the mil-relation formula against a target of known size. Judging range correctly also tells a shooter whether a target falls inside the rifle’s effective range, or whether the shot is past the point where the load stays reliable.
