Tax Stamp
The federal tax-paid approval required to own an NFA item such as a suppressor, documenting that the transfer tax has been paid and the transfer cleared.
A tax stamp is the federal approval document a buyer receives once the transfer tax on a regulated item has been paid and the application has cleared. It is the practical proof that an NFA item, most commonly a silencer for precision shooters, has been lawfully registered to its owner. The stamp ties a specific item, by serial number, to a specific registrant, and it should travel with the item as evidence of legal possession.
The same approval applies to an SBR and to a rifle wearing an integral suppressor, since both fall under the same registration scheme. Getting the stamp means submitting the application, paying the set fee, and waiting out the processing period before taking possession. Once issued, the stamp is kept on file and produced if the item’s status is ever questioned.
