A suppressor cover is a heat-resistant sleeve, usually built from layered fabric or sleeving rated for high temperatures, that wraps around the body of a silencer. Its first job is optical: a hot can radiates heat that distorts the air directly in front of the scope, producing the shimmering mirage that can blur the target and pull the aiming point off. By holding that heat in, a cover keeps the sight picture clean for longer strings of fire.

The second job is practical protection, since a can heats up quickly and stays dangerously hot to the touch. A cover lets the shooter handle the rifle and manage position changes without burns. Covers are most useful on a conventional threaded can, whereas an integral suppressor that surrounds the barrel manages its heat differently from a threaded muzzle device.
