The forend is the part of the stock ahead of the action, running under the barrel. It is the load-bearing front: your support hand, a bipod, or a rear bag rests here, so its width, shape, and stiffness affect how steadily the rifle tracks and returns between shots.

Most precision rifles free-float the barrel, meaning the forend is relieved so it never touches the barrel anywhere along its length. That keeps hand pressure and bipod load from flexing into the barrel and shifting point of impact. A wide, flat forend also rides bags and tripods far better than a narrow hunting profile.
