A dummy round mimics a live cartridge in shape and weight but contains no primer and no powder, so it cannot fire. Handloaders build them to dial in seating depth and cartridge base to ogive before committing components, and shooters use them to check feeding and ejection or to rehearse malfunction drills safely.

A dummy round overlaps with a snap cap, but the emphasis differs. Snap caps exist mainly to cushion the firing pin during dry-fire, while dummy rounds are about replicating a specific load for cycling and die setup. Mark them clearly and store them well away from live ammunition.
