A bull barrel might weigh 5-7 pounds where a sporter weighs 2-3. The mass dampens harmonics and slows heat buildup, both of which matter when you’re shooting strings of 5-10 rounds for a group.

For positional shooting (offhand, kneeling, tree stand) a bull barrel is a liability. For prone and bench precision work, it’s standard.
