Spitzer is German for “pointed.” The shape reduces drag compared to the round-nose bullets it replaced, increasing BC and flattening trajectory at distance.

Almost every modern rifle bullet is a spitzer of some variety: secant ogive, tangent ogive, hybrid ogive, plus the boat-tail at the back. The exception is some lever-action and tubular-magazine cartridges where pointed bullets can’t sit nose-to-primer safely.
