Scope caps shield the exposed glass at both ends of the tube from rain, blowing grit, and accidental knocks while the rifle is carried or stowed. The popular flip-up style is spring-loaded and hinged so it snaps open with a thumb when a target appears, then closes again to keep the objective lens and the ocular lens clean between strings. Simpler bikini-style covers and pull-on neoprene sleeves do the same job at lower cost, trading a little speed for security.

A scratched or fouled lens robs the scope of the contrast and clarity it was bought for, so caps are cheap insurance for an expensive optic. On the objective end, a flip cap also keeps stray light off the front element and can pair with a sunshade that extends the tube against glare. The main discipline is remembering to open them before settling in, since a closed cap is an easy way to lose a fleeting shot.
