LPVO
Also: Low Power Variable Optic
A low-power variable optic, such as a 1-6x or 1-8x, that runs from true 1x for close work up to mid-range magnification on the high end.
A low power variable optic is a riflescope whose bottom magnification setting is true 1x, letting the shooter keep both eyes open and engage targets fast like a red dot, then zoom up to six, eight, or ten power for precise shots at distance. This range makes the LPVO a versatile general-purpose scope for carbines and dual-role rifles, bridging the gap between close-quarters speed and mid-range accuracy. The compromise is that neither end is as specialized as a dedicated optic would be.
Focal plane choice drives a real tradeoff in this class. A first-focal-plane LPVO keeps its holdover marks true at every power but shrinks the reticle almost to invisibility at 1x, while a second-focal-plane design keeps a bold, usable aiming point down low, but without accurate subtensions except at maximum zoom. Which one fits depends on whether the shooter values fast close-range work or precise holds more.
