An exposed turret is a tall, uncapped adjustment knob designed so the shooter can grip and turn it directly. Because there is no cap to unscrew, corrections can be applied quickly, which is why this style dominates precision and tactical optics where dialing elevation for each distance is part of the routine. The taller body also leaves room for clear, tactile clicks and an easy-to-read numbered scale.

Most exposed turrets pair with a zero stop, a mechanical floor that prevents the dial from turning below the rifle’s zero and helps the shooter return to that setting by feel. The opposite approach is the capped turret, which trades quick access for protection and fits rifles that are zeroed once and held rather than adjusted.
