Brass sorting separates a pile of cases into groups that share a similar weight or, more directly, a similar internal case capacity. Cases that hold different volumes burn the same charge at slightly different pressures, which shows up as a wider velocity spread and more vertical dispersion at distance.

Sorting brass before loading lets the handloader build strings from cases that should behave alike, which tends to tighten extreme spread over a chronograph. Some reloaders sort by weight as a quick proxy, while others measure water capacity directly for a more precise grouping during reloading.
